Terry King was born on September 15, 1948 to the Rev. Terry T. King Sr. and Virginia Kennedy King in the Bronx, NY. Mr. King comes from a musical family and he fell in love with music at an early age. His father was a pastor and a gospel singer at a local church. At the age of 4, Mr. King's grandmother introduced him to the piano and the rest is history!
Terry was at The Ed Sullivan Theatre in NYC where he met Mr. Sidney Barnes. Mr. Barnes became Terry's mentor. Mr. Barnes created the group, "Rotary Connection". He found Minnie Riperton and included her in the group.
Terry King has been featured on numerous records since the early 60's. He worked at studio work and as a percussionist. He has shared the stage with many old and new talent.
Terry was a member of two well known groups, "The Temptations" with Dennis Edwards, Eddie Kendricks, Damon Harris, and Glenn Leonard and with The Drifters with Charlie Thomas, Don Thomas and Elsbeary Hobbs. He joined this group in 1978.
Terry recorded on four albums with this group, "Too Hot" in 1982, "Some Kind of Wonderful" (revised), "The Drifter's 16 Greatest Hits" and "The Drifters Live at the Bottom Line" in 1984.
In 1984, he performed with The Drifters on a show called, "Rock Rolls On" for Dick Clark, introduced by Laura Brannigan and Chuck Berry. A video of this show can be found on YouTube. The Drifters can be viewed in part one at (8:20) and in part two at(3:10).
In 1988, he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Charlie Thomas' Drifters.
In the same year, he joined "The Dirty Dancing Tour" with J.T. Carter (The Crests) and Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes. touring in France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan and Latin America.
In 1989, Terry filled in with Eddie Kendricks and Dennis Edwards of the Temptations in "The Temptations Review" as he continued to work with The Drifters. In June of 1991,David Ruffin had passed away and a year later, 1992, Terry rejoined Eddie Kendricks and Dennis Edwards of the Temptations Review, taking the place of David Ruffin.
In 2017 Terry King joined the Legendary Teenagers.
Fast forward to 2022, Terry has been on Hamilton Radio on the award winning "Gerry Petito Show", and other radio outlets promoting his three new singles, "I Want You Back", "First Love Affair", and "Jaccuzi Lover".
As was the case with other performing artists, he had been sidelined because of Covid-19 and could not perform but his first return show after the pandemic was with Gene DiNapoli productions, "The Golden Oldies Reunion Show, vol 2" Valentines show on February 11th with "Terry King's Drifters and the Driftettes." Terry King’s Drifters performed for the Dragon Boat Festival in Queens on Sept. 4th, for a 40th anniversary celebration with Lead East, and on October 22nd with Memories Music performing for a Halloween sock hop.
